We are delighted to introduce Sandvik Studio, our new home, which becomes our basecamp for our summer trips to Grimsey.
We've already told you about this small island, 40 km north of Iceland, on the Arctic Circle. We've been visiting it for 15 years and regularly organize trips to photograph (or even sketch) the birds of the Arctic Circle (puffins of course but also many other species such as various guillemots, razorbills, Arctic terns, phalaropes, common snipe, etc.).
We are absolutely convinced that Grimsey is THE best destination in Iceland (in the world?) for photographing puffins and other Arctic birds. Just imagine an island 5 km long, home to over a million birds, including 200,000 Atlantic puffins, all easily accessible.
Four times more than Skomer, twelve times more than Hornøya, and forty times more than Lunga, to name just the most well-known colonies.
By hosting you in our own home on Grimsey, we now have complete freedom to organize our stays at the best times throughout the summer, in an setting entirely dedicated to wildlife photography.
Furthermore, we can plan our days around the birds' activity and the photo sessions we have scheduled.
We have begun preparing the accommodation to perfectly suit your needs as photographers. We will provide a well-stocked ornithological library, as well as observation and photography equipment, and workstations where you can process your images and share them with the other participants.
Recently built and all on one level, our house is easily accessible, well-equipped and heated.
Once the renovations are complete, it will be able to accommodate groups of 4 people plus a guide. This is an ideal group size for working effectively on the island, with a good level of comfort.
Sandvik Studio will have a shared living and working space, a large kitchen where we will take most of our meals, a terrace, a bathroom, and 4 bedrooms (single or twin options available).
It is located in a strategic spot on the island, a short walk from the harbour and the village centre, and less than 100 meters from the nearest puffin colony.
The house will be ready to welcome you from the beginning of summer 2027, and in the future, we plan to develop other projects around Sandvik Studio, such as artist residencies and themed stays.
